Danny and Henery Max
Devastation
Danny (13) and Henery (10) were both diagnosed with Batten disease, a rare, progressive neurological disorder.
Danny has already experienced significant vision loss, including tunnel vision and seeing only in black and white.
The family is facing the emotional weight of an uncertain future while navigating ongoing treatments and medical care.
Their parents are balancing the heartbreak of their sons' diagnosis with the financial burden of medical bills and countless appointments.
Daily Challenges
Both parents work overnight as nurses while caring for their children during the day.
Managing frequent medical appointments, treatments, and daily responsibilities has created overwhelming physical and emotional exhaustion.
Danny's changing vision has made everyday activities more difficult and requires thoughtful accommodations.
After Make-A-Wish plans fell through due to complications, local neighbors rallied together to donate a shed for the family. While the generous gift was in place, they needed help turning it into a meaningful space.
Their father described experiencing "decision fatigue" and simply needed someone to step in with guidance, ideas, and support.
Design Solutions
Transformed the donated backyard shed into a safe, comfortable, sensory-friendly retreat for both boys.
Designed the space around their unique vision needs rather than aesthetics alone.
Carefully considered:
Accessible room layout
Comfortable furnishings
Appropriate lighting
Texture and tactile elements
Sound and sensory comfort
Safety and ease of navigation
Created a welcoming environment where both brothers could relax, play, spend time together, and enjoy a space designed specifically for them.
Impact
The shed became a meaningful place where Danny and Henery can enjoy their childhood despite the challenges they face.
The project provided the boys with a sense of independence, comfort, and ownership.
Their parents experienced relief knowing one major burden had been lifted from their shoulders.
The completed space serves as a reminder that they are supported by a caring community.
More than a room makeover, the project brought hope, encouragement, and practical love into a family walking through unimaginable circumstances.
